Indian Women’s Boxing Project – Demo 01
A rough demo for an independent documentary in production by Ameesha Joshi and Anna Sarkissian. Few people know that the best women’s boxers in the world are from India. They swept the 2006 World Women’s Boxing Championship in Delhi, winning medals in 8 out of 13 categories. With all eyes on cricket, virtually no one in India has heard about these world champions. We followed them for two months leading up to the competition. Mary Kom did not tell her parents that she is into boxing as they were against boxing.she requested her parents to be a boxer but they did not approve…..her parents came to know that their daughter (Mary Kom) was into boxing only when they saw her in the newspaper as a State Champion boxing winner…..You are truely a Million Dollar baby…It is pathetic that almost 70% of the population in India does not know her even after being 4 times world champion….FOLKS GET OUT OF THAT STINKING WELL

It’s a damn good documentary project. I can feel the limitations you must have faced during filming and processing. It’s great job done! Congrats to you both!
And as for Mary Kom, what shall I say. You are the million dollar baby. Shine on!

The colors and general cinematography are just delicious!
On your production blog I found that you were shooting with a Panasonic DVX. I’m going to be taking my Panasonic AGDVX100B to India later this year and was hoping you could post the following information on your blog or here:
1. Were you working with 24P or 24P Advanced?
2. What were your Scene File Settings?
3. Did you have additional lighting indoors?
4. Did you have trouble carrying your equipment through Indian Customs?
Thanks!

let me add some more. She is from Manipur North-east India. Even the Manipur govt. didn’t praise her and know her. Now she was just a Police woman in Manipur along with Four National Ladies Footballer… I wonder how can a 4th times world boxing champion & National Footballer are treated like this?

Wow…this is an AMAZING documentary!! I wish there was an actual movie about this so the eyes of the world can open and see the other side of sports!! it’s very moving and inspiring!!! I live in America but am Greek…and all these americans talk about is baseball and american football…the close mindedness is very sad…

I think sports in ones life is very important. More young girls should take on sports. It builds confidants and self esteem. Great Job.

it is exquisite to see people using their talents to break social constraints; this is what life is about – in my view. . .

It’s nice to see independently-made documentary features like this on YouTube from time to time; good work! I know this was a rough demo, but it could have done with a bit more boxing.

There are a lot of good women boxers in the state of Tamilnadu. Many had to: abusive husbands, mothers/fathers, and brothers/sisters.

What a beautiful rough cut! Please send it to my group, “Right to Fight” to request that it be added to my site (which is dedicated to women’s boxing).

I think this documentary should be screened all over India and abroad. Sportswomen in India in general, and marginalized region in particular get very little attention let alone enough means to survive..Thank You Ameesha Joshi and Anna Sarkissian.

I hope that this documentary will be shown in England as we have heard and read so much about it in the last 12 months. Indian female boxers led by M-C.Kom have done so much for the sport and for their country though I do not believe that they are ‘the best boxers in the world’. Ireland’s Katie Taylor is in my view THE best so much so that the Indian authorities want her coach/father Peter to train their team inc MerryKom. That said the Indian team are a credit to their sport and the Nation, Womens’ sport in general gets little media coverage anywhere in the world (except for tennis and for the Olympics) but coverage of womens boxing will change come 2012 and as a ‘mere male’ I can assure your readers that once they see such as Canada’s Mary Spencer, Ireland’s Katie Taylor, and the Indian ladies then all will see that womens amateur boxing is highly skilful and quite unlike men’s amateur boxing – or the professional sport – in any way.Good Luck for the film and try and get it shown at oen of the many London Film Festivals.
