Directed by Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia is an adaptation of the memoirs of Julia Child’s “My Life in France” and Julie Powell book “Julie & Julia: 365 days, 524 recipes , 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen. “Ephron adapted the two stories into a script non-cohesive, following Powell hopes to accomplish something in his life starting to make all 524 recipes in Julia Child’s” Mastering the Art of Cooking French “cookbook over a year and blog about the experience. Although this is the backbone of the film, the other half of the film cuts in time in the life of the child and his life in France learning to cook and write said cookbook.

Half of Julie Powell’s story is shot in his apartment ill-lit and dilapidated. In no way atmosphere to visit and certainly one that does nothing for the call of the food she is cooking. Despite how dark and ugly all her scenes are the worst in the history of Powell is that it is not a sympathetic character and her relationship with her husband (if you can call it) is not credible or appealing. Ephron gives the audience no reason to cheer for Powell as she began her task, and therefore you could not care less if she is doing. Suffice it to say, when your character admits she is a bitch and even his friend called agree more with her, you need to do more than have the winning recipe for boneless duck intended to give the public a reason to love him.

On the other side of the equation that you have a relationship entirely credible between Paul and Julia Child, who comes off almost effortlessly. Streep plays Julia eccentricities with enthusiasm and a desire to convincing life. Tucci takes Paul all the understanding in the world as a caring and supportive husband who loves his wife with all his heart. Both stories in this film could not be more opposite of each other and without any reward at the end, there is little reason for either to exist, even if a film of 90 minutes on all sides of Julia ‘s history would have been a thing of beauty.

Instead, we have two hours of ups and downs. Laughter, friendship, love, mutual respect, trials, tribulations and everything that is overcome in the way you compose the story of Julia. Meanwhile, Julie suffers too much trial and tribulation and is determined to overcome them, but she does not laugh, just a true friend to the site and say their marriage is full of love or an ounce of respect would be a stretch as she wallows in self pity when things do not go his way and back slaps when they do, both at the expense of his marriage.

I have not spoken with anyone who still felt the side story of Julie Powell worked, other than to strengthen the hand of Julia Child. This is not always a problem because it is rare that you appreciate all the aspects of a film, but when things like this 50/50 is you have problems.
