when was the last 15 round boxing match for a world title?

Im not 100% sure if it was the very last 15 rounder but when Deuk Koo Kim fought Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini in the early 80s and died from his injurys the WBC immeadiately changed from 15 to 12 rounds for Championship bouts, the others followed suit but im not sure how quickly there may have been a few more before all of the sanctioning bodies agreed that 12 rounds was the way to go.

I did a quick search and found that the last 15 round world title fight was actually fought as late as 29th August 1988 and it was sanctioned by the IBF it was a Strawweight fight between Samuth Sithnaruepol and In-Kyu Hwang. Samuth won a Unanimous Decision. The fight took place in Bangkok, Thailand.

jorge paez vs calvin grove, for the ibf featherweight title in august ’88.

paez won a majority decision after dropping grove 3 times in the 15th round.

paez is apparently making a comeback in november at age 43.

frank d is correct with his answer, however it may be of interest that harold brazier and buck smith fought to a 15 round no decision in a non title match in 1990 in oklahoma.

I believe McGirt/Brown was scheduled for 15, though it was over in one. Come to think of it, I can’t say conclusively whether or not it was a title fight, as Brown was pretty much done as any kind of elite fighter by then.
